Days 8 - 12: Sheridan, WY

We left out of the badlands around mid-morning heading for Sheridan, WY. On the way out we finally got to see a Bighorn Sheep in the wild. As we were heading out of the park, I looked over to say something to Jodi and there, resting on the side of some rocks was a ram. Well obviously, we had to pull over and get a better look and get some pictures. Jodi was ecstatic that we finally got to see one. I'll admit, I was pretty happy about it as well. And I was surprised at just how big they are.

After a few minutes we got back on the road and proceeded on our way. Since we knew we'd be passing close by we decided to swing by Devils Tower, made famous in 'Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind'. Local Indian legend has it that a group of warriors were chased to the top of the tower by a giant bear. The bear was unable to climb up but, in its attempts, left claw marks in the side. After a while the bear gave up and left. Or so the legend goes. What a beautiful place. I'd love to have spent more time exploring the area, but we only had time for a quick lunch, some pictures and then getting back on our way.

Finally, we made it to Sheridan and settled in at a KOA for our stay. It was a nice campground, easy to get in and out of and plenty of amenities.

Over the next few days we rode the bike to Ft. Kearney, site of a massacre of 81 US Army troops on 21DEC1866. It was interesting to read and understand the events that took place that day, the weeks leading up to it and the weeks that followed. This battle was a defining event for one of the Indian leaders, Crazy Horse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetterman_Fight

We also rode through Bighorn National Forest, up over mountains and back around to Sheridan from the south. Our route took us north on I90 into Ranchester, WY. We then headed west on US14 over the mountains. When we hit Burgess Junction, we continued on ALT US14 into Lovell WY where we picked up US310 heading south. We stayed on US310 until Greybull where we jumped onto US20 down to Worland then turned east on US16, through Ten Sleep (so named because it took ten sleeps to get there from some other location LOL) into Buffalo, WY where we turned north to Sheridan on I90 again. About 200 miles for the day.

Oh, did I mention that we had a visitor each day we were in Sheridan?
